Testimonials

Invisible orchestra just makes me so happy. This is a funny, playful, addictive experience that gives you a complete workout while creating unpredictable and unexpectedly beautiful music. It is, quite simply, genius.
— Sue Giles AM (Vice President of Assitej)
Invisible Orchestra was a highlight of our Arts Centre Melbourne summer program this year. This fun, musical experiment provided families an opportunity to share in a unique, giant soundscape. Participants young and old can take charge of the conducting and create the most fascinating score. It oozes fun, learning, inclusivity and team work - as all participating decided how was best to shimmy their way across the orchestra.
— Mary Harvey (Creative Producer, Families and Children, Arts Centre Melbourne)

Participant Reactions

Children’s response to Invisible Orchestra is one of unbridled joy: some dance, some wonder at the magical way it seems to work, and others explore the space to find their favourite sounds. Some stay for hours!

A musical experiment

Invisible Orchestra has no instruments. Through a network of sensors, music is streamed through objects, creating a hidden soundscape waiting to be unearthed.  By sitting, crawling, or dancing on their seats, children bring sound to life, transforming a humble circle of chairs into a symphony. With the press of a button the Invisible Orchestra can be: a piano, a choir, an orchestra, a rock band, or an intergalactic space station.

No recording or video can properly capture what it’s like to participate in the Invisible Orchestra. The unbridled anarchy and joy of kids play creates a soundscape unlike any you’ve heard before: free play creates a scattered array of sounds from fifteen different speakers that somehow work, chaotic but still a pleasure to encounter. Musicians shape the sonic space in collaboration with the participants and respond with background musical accompaniments. This ever-evolving improvisation gives way to collective music making when the children become conductors, instructing the crowd to create huge blocks of sound: choirs, string sections, and bold brass all harmoniously play at the point of a finger.
