What is Invisible Orchestra?

Welcome...take a seat in the Invisible Orchestra, where children are maestros and chairs come alive.

Invisible Orchestra has no instruments. Through a network of sensors, music is streamed through objects, creating a hidden soundscape waiting to be unearthed.  By sitting, crawling, or dancing on their seats, children bring sound to life, transforming a humble circle of chairs into a symphony. With the press of a button the Invisible Orchestra can be: a piano, a choir, an orchestra, a rock band, or an intergalactic space station.

Invisible Orchestra launched at Arts Centre Melbourne in 2019 after five years of technical development. The project boldly embraces new technologies to allow children to become composers and performers. It is suitable for children aged 2- 8, and their families, with a capacity of 60 people at one time, and 700 over one day. The performance is guided by two actors and a sound designer, over 2 x 2hr sessions. It is physical, engaging, loud, and unlike anything you’ve ‘heard’ before…
